Following the Russian military aggression against Ukraine, any ongoing or planned bilateral engagement with representatives of Russian public bodies and state-owned enterprises in the field of energy, including at technical/expert level, has been suspended with immediate effect.

With respect to restrictive measures against Russia, including on energy, further information is available in EU sanctions against Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.

The Commission published on 8 March 2022 the REPowerEU strategy to reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels as soon as possible.

On 6 May 2025, the Commission presented a roadmap to phase out EU imports of Russian gas, oil and nuclear energy.
