Following the Russian military aggression against Ukraine, any ongoing or planned bilateral engagement with representatives of Russian public bodies and state-owned enterprises in the field of energy, including at technical/expert level, has been suspended with immediate effect.

The Commission published on 8 March 2022 the REPowerEU strategy to reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels as soon as possible.
On 6 May 2025, the Commission presented a roadmap to phase out EU imports of Russian gas, oil and nuclear energy.
